Polo in Patagonia

History

The development of Polo in northern Patagonia started the same way it did everywhere else in Argentina; The Estancias. The game was introduced in this remote region in 1939. It was the Argentine government’s idea to set up a Mounted Military Base in the Lakes Region next to the border with Chile. The Base was named “Regimiento # 4 de Caballeria de Montada  General Lavalle.”  A year later, the first polo field in Patagonia was built. In 1946 the Army finally settled in the area and built a second base in San Martin de los Andes. They built a second polo field and they founded the “Coraceros Polo Club”.

Back in the day, the big ranch owners and the military officers played polo for recreation. When spring came and the snow melted, they organized polo matches and tournaments in order to meet and share a good time with their neighbors and friends. It was a gathering between family and friends where they celebrated their friendship and camaraderie. Those values have been preserved for generations and still stand today.
